Software piracy is on the rise, not just by the kid who burns a copy of Diablo II and borrows his friend's CD key, but by organized groups of pirates, crackers and hackers. In a three-part series, GameSpy's David Cuciz delves into the problem, complete with interviews with enforcement agencies and a software pirate, world-wide piracy statistics and the fight that is raging to bring software piracy under control. Here's a sneak peek: Friday (6/9): An overview of the problem and a look at the terminology. We provide statistics from leading enforcement agencies and take a look at some of the things being done to stem the problem. Here's a snip: Even in the United States and Western Europe, where the issue is addressed very seriously, the average piracy rate averages 30%-40%, rising up to the 75% range in other regions. Russia and Asia have the most active pirate markets, with peaks of up to 90% of all the their software being illegitimate copies. In 1994, Vietnam and China led the list with astounding 100% and 97% rates respectively. Those rates have since declined over the years (a 1999 survey estimated them at 98% and 91%), but Asian markets are still plagued with enormous piracy rates. Former Soviet countries are also high in this list. Anslow Saturday (6/10): Looks in-depth at enforcement, from chats with Microsoft on how they are dealing with piracy, to a comprehensive interview with Terry Anslow, chief investigator for ELSPA, the European Leisure Software Publishers Association. Here's a preview: "Criminals have been quick to realize the connection with counterfeit products and huge financial rewards. They can carry out the business of counterfeiting discs with a small chance of detection, and in the comparative safety of their own home amass huge profits. We have evidence that major drug importations, child , and paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland are being funded by this illegal activity. Last year the ELSPA conducted almost 1,000 raids, and in 80% (4 out of 5) discovered evidence of other criminal matters being involved." - Terry Anslow Sunday (6/11): The final day offers the juicy stuff: getting in with the pirates, surfing their boards and newsgroups for details, as well as a chat with a pirate who calls himself Long John Silver: "Where I lived (Northern Italy), even a big center like Milan had few retailers who specialized in computers and software, and often I'd read of a title on British magazines which would never get released here, or if it was released, there weren't many copies around or they were too expensive. With a bit of swapping, you could get what you were interested in. Then there was what I call the 'rebellion' factor: many of us computer users felt cheated by the industry. Prices were high, and if you spent your hard-saved cash on one title, you would find its price slashed sooner or later. Moreover, you couldn't "try before you buy" and often if you got home and found the game wasn't working, the retailer wouldn't even replace it. We weren't like that--we charged nothing, and all of our titles worked the first time, and if they didn't, we'd replace them. You could say pirates back then were far more honest than the average retailer." - Long John Silver Be sure to check back each day for the complete investigative report.
