Printer Sharing from MacOSX

Printer Sharing from Mac OSX

This is a HOWTO for printer sharing from Mac OSX,including installation of gimp-print, using Sambato share printers with ms-windows PCs, enabling lpdprinter sharing to Unix and Linux machines, and IPPto MacOSX-attached printers. For sharing from Mac to Mac, you don'tneed this HOWTO. If you're trying to use the printeron a Mac from a PC or Unix/Linux box on thenetwork, the solution you need may be here. gimp-printGimp-print is included with MacOS 10.3 & 10.4 so you don't need toinstall anything or configure a special printer queue. To use thegimp-print drivers, configure printers with a USBdriver rather than an Epson or HP driver. If you are using MacOS-10.2, the gimp-printdrivers produce better output or are more versatile than thosesupplied by the manufacturer of the printer or the stock MacOSXdrivers, and in any case you will need them to share the printer viaCUPS and for programs like LyX that do not use the Mac print-center. Install thelatest version, and if you have not already done so, install ESPghostscript. See the included documentation or the Gimp-Print FAQ for OS X for instructions on how toconfigure printer(s) with a gimp-print driver. For a USB printer thatMacOSX has automatically configured with a stock OSX driver, youshould configure a second queue with a gimp-print driver. On the Macyou can choose which queue to use for specific documents. From remotemachines, you will want to use the gimp-print queue. When you have configured your printer(s), look at http://localhost:631/printers or /etc/printcap to see the queuename(s) the system has assigned to your printer(s). This isthe mac-queue-name in the instructions below.SambaThe Samba server included with MacOSX is a powerful andeasy-to-configure package that shares files, printers, and otherresources via the SMB protocol. If you are running MacOS-10.2 (these two steps arenot necessary on later versions of MacOS): Edit /etc/smb.conf so the [printers] section looks like: [printers] comment = All Printers printable = yes path = /tmp guest ok = yes Edit /System/Library/StartupItems/Samba/StartupParameters.plist to insert Uses = ("Printing","Super Server"); between the line beginning Requires and the line beginning OrderPreference.Read the smb.conf man page or the Sambadocumentation to decide if you want to add tothe [global] section of /etc/smb.conf: workgroup = workgroup-name hosts allow = your-network-ip security = shareDepending on your network configuration, you may need to change the access in the <Location/> section of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. The configuration rules are similar to those for the Apache web-server.Enable Samba printer sharing in System Preferences by clicking Sharing → Windows File Sharing. If you upgrade your MacOS version, check to see that Windows File Sharing is still enabled. Caution: if your network is not behind a firewall blocking ports 137 and 139, and you haven't limited access in /etc/smb.conf, enabling Samba could share your printers and files with the world. One user has reported that with some versions of MS-Windows he needed a user account on the Mac for each user on the PCs in the network, with the exact name (including capitalization) and password as used on the PCs.On the ms-windows PCs on your network: Go to Network Neighborhood and click on the name of the Mac. You should see an entry for printers and separate entries for each printer you are sharing from the Mac. Click on the printer you want to configure. In the pop-up, supply the driver to use: if the Mac printer is b/w, use Apple Laserwriter; for a color printer use Apple Color Laserwriter. You may have to insert your system disk or give the path to the printer drivers for ms-windows to find the driver. Click OK or Add or whatever your version of ms-windows uses to add a new printer.I know: you probably don't have an Apple Laserwriter. You still want to use the Apple Laserwriter drivers. Thegoal is to send proper Postscript to the Mac, which CUPS and thegimp-print drivers on the Mac will translate to the codes your printerunderstands. Microsoft drivers are notorious for non-portablePostscript, but the Apple Laserwriter drivers work. You should now be able to print from the PC to the printer onthe Mac.UNIX TIPS Use emacs, vi, pico, or TextEdit in plain text mode to edit configuration files. To uncomment a line in a configuration file, delete the ; or # character at the beginning of the line. To edit configuration files with administrator permissions, like smb.conf, either use sudo editor-name filename in the terminal, or edit a copy of the file and use sudo cp in the terminal to copy the edited file to the original. lpdTo share a printer on the Mac across an ethernetnetwork, in System Preferences click Sharing → PrinterSharing. If your network is not behind a firewall that blocks port631, you may want to edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to limit access to yournetwork or subnet. Be careful not to override the changes the systemmakes to enable printer sharing. If you change the configurationfile, reboot or restart CUPS with sudo killall cupsd sudo cupsdIf your Unix or Linux system uses lpd to shareprinters across a network. The CUPS print system on MacOS cancommunicate with these systems if you enable the cups-lpd daemon. MacOS 10.2 — add to /etc/inetd.conf (all on one line, like the other entries in the file): printer stream tcp nowait root /usr/libexec/cups/daemon/cups-lpd cups-lpd -o document-format=application/octet-stream Then restart inetd with sudo killall -HUP inetd. MacOS 10.3 — download and install the file /etc/xinetd.d/printer, or create your own version with the contents: service printer { socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /usr/libexec/cups/daemon/cups-lpd server_args = -o document-format=application/octet-stream groups = yes }Then restart xinetd with sudo killall -HUP xinetd. MacOS 10.4 — in a terminal, issue the command sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/printer.plist Caution: without a firewall blocking port 515, ortcp-wrappers with inetd, or xinetd configured to limit access to theprinter service with an only_from directive, lpdprinter-sharing will expose your printers to the world.Unix/Linux clientsTo configure a Unix or Linux machine that is not runningCUPS to use the USB printer on the Mac, use the command lpadmin local-printername -s mac-ip-name\!mac-queue-nameon the Unix or Linux box. If you don't have a working DNS,substitute the ip-address of the Mac for mac-ip-name. You mayneed to enable the printer with enable local-printername accept local-printernameSome older versions of Unix or Linux may require differenttools to add a printer. If you need to write an /etc/printcapentry, use :rm=mac-ip-name:rp=mac-queue-name:. Oncethe printer is configured on the Unix or Linux box, you shouldbe able to print to local-printername with lpr and/or lp.If you have a Unix/Linux driver for the printer, you canconfigure it as a filter with lpadmin or in /etc/printcap, anduse lpr -P local-printername -o raw to avoid thePostscript-to-printer driver that CUPS on the Mac wouldnormally invoke.IPPIf your remote box supports IPP printing,(ms-windows-xp, ms-windows-2000, Linux/Unix with CUPS, orms-windows-95/98 with the IPP update) you can configure it to print to a printer on the Macwithout setting up Samba or lpd. Make sure you have gimp-printinstalled, as described above, and on SystemPreferences click Sharing → Printer Sharing. Then, on the remotesystem, set up a network printer with URL http://mac-ip-name:631/printers/mac-queue-name If you don't have a working DNS, substitute the ip-address of the Macfor mac-ip-name. From a Linux or Unix system running CUPS, you may need to specify theprinter as "Raw"/"Raw Queue (en)".For ms-windows PCs, which by default do not generate Postscriptprinter output, use the Apple Laserwriter or AppleColorLaserwriter driver. If your remote system supports it, you can also use IPP printconfiguration with lpd if you have configured the Mac to handleremote lpd clients. The URL from the client is: lpd://mac-ip-name/mac-queue-nameprinting text/raw filesTo use dedicated printer drivers on IPP or LPD clients instead ofsending Postscript to the CUPS driver on the Mac, edit thefiles /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.typeson the Mac to uncomment the linesbeginning application/octet-stream. This will enableprinting of the raw printer queue on the Mac. Reboot or give thecommands sudo killall cupsd sudo cupsd on the Mac after you make this change. You can then installthe appropriate printer-driver on the remote client.disclaimerThe information on this page is believed to be accurate, has been usedsuccessfully on many systems and sites, and has benefited from thecomments and suggestions of many users.
