GCATT is an initiative to create real and virtual research centers of excellence in advanced telecommunications - the latest technologies and applications in networking, content processing, and system solutions. GCATT is home to more than 20 of these centers, each led by world class innovators in their field. GCATT is housed in the Centergy building at Technology Square. GCATT welcomed its third Executive Director and GRA Eminent Scholar, Dr. Nikil Jayant, in 2001. Dr. Jayant came to Georgia Tech in 1999 after nearly 30 years with Bell Labs. Dr. Jayant and his research teams are responsible for scores of groundbreaking inventions that have paved the way for today's broadband services, particularly compression technologies that have gone on to define cellular telephony, voice over IP, MP3 and HDTV. Under his stewardship, GCATT established a three-prong effort to guide its future focus: Discovering New Technologies Leading Public Policy Initiatives Commercializing Innovations GCATT News & Notes Two former FCC staffers, an engineer and a lawyer, discussed the process of getting a new wireless product or service out of the lab and into the civil marketplace in a spectrum policy talk held in the GCATT boardroom Thursday, June 19, at 3:30 pm. Dr. Michael Marcus of Marcus Spectrum Solutions LLC, and Anne Linton, Esq., of Patton Boggs LLC, explained current FCC policies and the steps necessary to get new technologies through the policy maze. They explained, too, that policies can change if the change is realistic and applicants have allowed enough lead time. CACP continues to operate as a neutral authority, monitoring and assessing related legislative and regulatory issues, identifying future technology, and promoting a clearer understanding of the ever changing technology landscape. CACP also has a new academic home within the School of Public Policy of the Ivan Allen College at the Georgia Institute of Technology, enabling synergistic collaborations in public policy, economics, technology, communications, and international affairs.
